Upcoming Events
Alki Beach / July 5th Cleanup
July 5th is typically one of the messiest morning on the beach, and we're anticipating this year will be no different—with lots of garbage, and 4th of July remnants to gather. We’ll help Parks & Rec get a head start on the cleanup with an early morning event and multiple hands will help make shorter work.
Harbor Ave. / Spruce
Group member Shiloh reached out to ask about a Sprucing of the heavily overgrown sidewalk along the east side of Harbor Ave, down towards the bridge. We’ll hop out Monday and give it an initial cleanup—opening the sidewalk back up for easy passage, cleaning the parking strip, and trimming back the retaining walls on the abandoned properties along the street.
Admiral Junction / Spruce
We’ll join Lewis, our Youth Ambassador for the Summer, on his first week of Sprucing the Admiral Junction with our third group effort for the week. Lewis will be working on removing suckers from trees, cleaning up tree wells, spreading mulch, sweeping up curb lines, picking up trash, and any other Sprucing activity that will put a shine on the Junction.
Lincoln Park Beach
We’ll pick up where we left off last week helping Parks & Rec remove a Mustard bloom from the beach, south of Colman Pool. If we tackle that, we’ll continue to pull weeds, blackberry and other invasives off the beach as well. As always, there will also be trash picking opportunities.
Admiral Junction / Spruce
We’ll join Lewis, our Youth Ambassador for the Summer, on his first week of Sprucing the Admiral Junction with our second of three group efforts for the week. Lewis will be working on removing suckers from trees, cleaning up tree wells, spreading mulch, sweeping up curb lines, picking up trash, and any other Sprucing activity that will put a shine on the Junction.
Fauntleroy Median / Spruce
Last week we hit the median on Fauntleroy and Genesee and got a ton of great work done, including trimming back most of the street facing edges of the triangle, exposing the sidewalk, and dropping the line-of-sight hazards that were present at all the intersections.
Admiral Junction / Spruce
We’ll join Lewis, our Youth Ambassador for the Summer, on his first day of Sprucing the Admiral Junction with one of three group efforts for the week. Lewis will be working on removing suckers from trees, cleaning up tree wells, spreading mulch, sweeping up curb lines, picking up trash, and any other Sprucing activity that will put a shine on the Junction.
Lincoln Park Beach
Tim at Parks & Rec made a special request for a Sprucing event along the beach at Lincoln Park, right by the Troll and Colman Pool. We’ll work on pulling weeds, blackberry and other invasives. There will also be trash picking opportunities. The area looks much better since we did the massive blackberry pull last Summer, but they continue to pop up.
All Hands / Little Saigon
Join us on Wednesday, June 24 in the Little Saigon neighborhood! We’ll meet at Hoa Mai Park and send teams out in all directions to remove litter, spruce up our streets and build community together. No RSVP required, just show up and pitch in. Stay after for a FIFA World Cup Watch Party in the park!
S. Rose & Rainier S. Triangle / Spruce
We’ll head back to the trianglular median at S. Rose and Rainier Ave. S again this SDOT this week, but on Tuesday, due to an All Hands cleanup in Little Saigon on Wednesday. We gave this mini-block a nice initial clean last week, and will continue weeding, scrapping curb lines, and spreading mulch this week—there’ll be lots of trash picking opportunities around the neighborhood as well.
Fauntleroy Median/ Spruce
It’s been several years since we hit the median on Fauntleroy and Genesee and I don’t think it’s been touched by the city since. I’ve fielded two inquiries from neighbors about the block in as many weeks, as the pathway through is very overgrown, as-are the curb lines. The planting beds are likewise overtaken by blackberries creating line-of-sight issues for cars and pedestrians.
Orca Beach Cleanup / Plunge & Silent Disco
Join the original Seattle Orca Plungers to raise awareness about increased water pollution in the Southern Resident Killer Whales shared waters. Join us in the water holding a zero-waste SRKW cutout or cheer us on from shore. More than just playing in the water - Impact that Matters. Bring a towel, water shoes, and bag to collect beach trash. A Cleaner Alki will provide the gear for the event.
Harbor Ave. / Alki Trail
We'll drop back in along Alki Trail and return to where we first started opening up the tree line 2 years, and 33 visits ago! Since then we’ve helped the Port of Seattle create a brighter, safer, and more welcoming stretch along the bike path.
Schmitz Park / Whole Foods
We’ll have a rare afternoon ivy pulling event at Heather’s Schmitz Park parcel off Spokane St., continuing to remove English ivy and other invasives with a crew from West Seattle Whole Foods. We’ve made great progress here over the past several years with many large-scale ivy pulling events. Please join us if you want to get out into the park.
Duwamish Waterway Park / Spruce
We’ll head back to Duwamish Waterway Park this week for part of our Spruced series. The past two weeks we’ve made great progress and really started to open up the view from the street approaching the park that is overgrown by blackberry brambles. We opened up a large area that needs root ball extraction, and we can have crews starting to work the perimeter of the cove behind the fence that will be coming down soon.
S. Rose & Rainier S. Triangle / Spruce
We’ll head to a new trianglular median at S. Rose and Rainier Ave. S this week, which houses a local bus stop about 1.2 miles south down Rainier where we’ve worked the past several weeks. We’ll give this mini-block a nice initial clean this Wednesday, and see where it leaves us for future visits—there’ll be lots of trash picking opportunities around the neighborhood as well.
Marginal Place Collab
We’ll be doing a collaborative cleanup on Saturday of Marginal Place and Riverside Memorial Park, the small plaza at the bottom of Marginal Place, which will be getting cleaned by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society. So pick your interest and we’ll clean both ends of the street. A later start time than usual for those looking for a weekend, afternoon cleanup.
Neighborly Spruce
Last week we helped an elderly neighbor who had some broken cedar branches in his backyard. We got all the large branches cut down and have queued up some more piles to take to the dump. With one more visit and enough hands we can also put some time on other invasives in the yard, and get it back towards a manageable state for the family.
Duwamish Waterway Park / Spruce
We’ll head back to Duwamish Waterway Park this week for part of our Spruced series in Equity Priority neighborhoods. The actual park is adjacent to Port and SDOT properties along the Duwamish that we’ll help clear invasives and trash from. Last week we made great progress and really started to open up the view from the street approaching the park that is overgrown by blackberry brambles.
S. Graham & Rainier S. Triangle / Spruce
We’ll head back to the trianglular median at S. Graham and Rainier Ave. S this week., which houses a local bus stop. We gave this mini-block a nice initial clean last Wednesday, and I believe we can wrap up the weed pulling and spread some wood chips this week—there’ll be lots of trash picking opportunities around the neighborhood as well for those so inclined.
Duwamish Head Greenspace
We’ll host a group of West Seattle High School students from the Interact Club (Rotary) in Duwamish Head Greenspace on Sunday and continue pulling ivy and connecting areas that we’ve cleared before. We’ll meet along Admiral Way where we typically enter the woods, about 1/3 of the way down the hill. I’ll set up an A-frame sign along the sidewalk where we’ll meet.
College Street Ravine
My neighbors and I will be doing a cleanup in the College St, Ravine on National Trails Day. This is a lovely little greenspace between neighborhoods that could use some invasive species removal and wood chip spreading along the trail. I figured if we could get some ACA regulars we could get into some of the heavier lifts of blackberry and ivy removal.
Neighborly Spruce
A group member tagged ACA in a request for help from the community for an elderly neighbor who had some broken branches up in his backyard cedar tree. I scouted it and figured its something we could help remedy. We’ll need to drop several that are still up in the tree and then cut them down to manageable pieces. With enough hands we can also put some time on other invasives in the overgrown yard, and then haul out the cut material.
Duwamish Waterway Park / Spruce
We’ll head to Duwamish Waterway Park this week at request of Seattle Parks & Rec, for part of our Spruced series in Equity Priority neighborhoods. The actual park is adjacent to Port and SDOT properties along the Duwamish that we’ll help clear invasives and trash from, to create a more open and airy environment.
S. Graham & Rainier S. Triangle / Spruce
We’ll head several blocks east on S. Graham St. this week to work on a triangle median at S. Graham and Rainier Ave. S., which houses a local bus stop. We’ll give this stretch a nice reset for the neighborhood removing invasives from the triangle and making way for some mulch—there’ll be lots of trash picking opportunities around the neighborhood as well.
Woodland Park / Spruce
I was in the midst of planning a collaborative event with Amazon for this coming Tuesday, but it fell through right after I connecting with forest stewards Jenny and Greg who take care of sections of Woodland Park. The park recently mowed down a patch of blackberries that they’re working on removing, so I told them we could pitch in on that.
All Hands / Hillman City
Join us on Saturday, May 30 in the Hillman City neighborhood, we’ll meet at Onda Origins Cafe & Roastery and send teams out in all directions to remove litter, spruce up our streets and build community together.
Lafayette Elementary / Spruce
Join us for a special after school Sprucing event at Lafayette Elementary to help close the school year out, with Lafayette’s PTA. Interested kids will stay after school, joined by their families—and all community members are welcomed to come out and give this neighborhood gem some love as well.
Little Saigon / Spruce
We’ll visit Little Saigon this week to help ready the community’s Spring Cleaning the following day. The organizers have asked for help priming the planter boxes along Weller St. and tidying their contents for a bright, fresh paint job during their work party. We’ll also get some banh mi sandwiches for lunch after the work party.
Cottage Grove / Spruce
We’ll head back to Cottage Grove Park again this week behind the kid’s play area. Last week we opened up a fence line between the park and a neighbor’s yard that Parks and Rec has been getting complaints about and created a more open and airy area for the neighborhood. This week we’ll go after root balls, weeds, and other invasives to continue to groom this long neglected area of the park.
S. Graham Street / Spruce
We’ll head back to S. Graham St. this week to keep digging up rootballs and clear the north side of the street, the corner planting beds and the cracks along the curb to give this stretch a nice reset for the neighborhood.
Duwamish Head Greenspace
We’ll head back to Duwamish Head Greenspace with Heather on Friday and continue pulling ivy and connecting areas that we’ve cleared before, meeting at the same spot we worked last time by the newly opened street end.
