Adopt-a-Highway Clean

  • Near Transfer Station entrance (5th Ave) 8100 2nd Ave S Seattle, WA, 98108 United States (map)

This will be the first clean along our newly adopted stretch of Highway 99. We have the first southbound stretch heading out of West Seattle starting at Holden by the Transfer Station and will be responsible to clean up from there to the pedestrian overpass at South Park.

WSDOT has lots of rules so we’ll be cautious in how we approach this as I want us to do it by the books. First and foremost is safety. Only people who have signed the AAH application can be on the highway cleaning, currently I believe I’ve turned in 15 applications. Secondly, we can only clean on the shoulder of our stretch and are not allowed in the median. Technically we can only clean our section as well, but after we have our area done I suspect we’ll be able to get temporary contracts to clean other sections as this whole stretch of road is a disaster.

This will take a team effort to get this area clean. Unfortunately we can only have 6 highway people cleaning at a time but there will be plenty to keep anyone who wants to help busy on surface streets leading up to on & off ramps. This first day will teach us a lot about this new type of cleanup. Due to the mess, we’re planning on two successive Saturday cleans to complete the section, or see how far we can get.

Vests, gloves, buckets, and pickup sticks will be provided and we'll transfer all the trash into WSDOT bags for pickup.
