The Ohio State University Buck-I-SERV Cleanup Series
Day 1, Homelessness. Monday’s cleanup will focus on abandoned encampments in the West Duwamish Greenbelt behind South Seattle College’s Chinese Gardens. We started this project in April and welcome the OSU students to partner with us on this important restorative work of creating a cleaner, safer environment.
We invite A Cleaner Alki community members to work side-by-side with the students to remove camp remnants and approach our service work with empathy and compassion for those who find themselves in these dire situations, often unhoused and living on the fringes as a result of unaddressed addiction or mental illness.
After hauling out, we’ll stage and report our cleanup to Seattle Public Utilities Adopt a Street program for pick-up by city contractors.
The Buck-I-SERV Program
10 Ohio State students and their advisors will be visiting Seattle over the week of May 8-12 and participating in OSU’s Buck-I-SERV service program. A Cleaner Alki was reached out to for service opportunities in our local cleanup scene and we’ve designed a series of three afternoon cleanups that will touch on the program’s emphasis of self reflection, social justice and civic engagement.
Buck-I-SERV is Ohio State University's Alternative Break Program that began as a student initiative with one single trip to New York City in 2003. Since then, the program has grown to provide more than 80 trips per year to over sixteen states and five countries. The mission of Buck-I-SERV is to provide students with a challenging and engaging opportunity to lead and learn through direct service experiences. Their motto is: Travel. Learn. Serve.
