We’ll be doing a collaborative cleanup on Harbor Island with employees of Vigor Shipyards. Vigor’s Environmental Compliance Specialist reached out and set the wheels in motion and is working with the port to help flag for the event along 16th Ave SW at the end of the Klickitat Ave Bridge and carry the message to Vigor employees who will be joining in on the cleanup.
The area is a great opportunity for trash collection as it has likely been neglected for many years by passersby and the constant buzz of the port. In many spots starting with a rake will be advantageous to get into piles before scooping up but there will also be lots of grabber and bucket work for those who like to walkabout. There will likely be much more material than we can handle in a single cleanup so we’ll try to make an ongoing series out of this and develop a relationship with the Port folks. For those who like the Spruced cleanups there will also be ample opportunities along the route to cut back overgrown weeds and bushes to help open up infrastructure. Pick whichever cleanup type appeals to you!
There’s quite a bit of port traffic in the area we’ll be working with heavy trucks and worker vehicles so we’ll use utmost care as we work along 16th. The west side of the road has a nice wide sidewalk to work and the east side has the rail yard that we should have access to as well.
