This is an encampment area I've had my eye on since last Summer when we cleaned up the stairway camp off Juneau, behind Louisa Boren STEM School.
In the Summer this camp was occupied and had lots of activity coming and going. Unfortunately, it's on the hillside directly above the STEM school playground, I could hear children playing this morning when I scouted the area who were less than 100 yards away and the entrance off of Croft Pl. SW is less than 25 yards off the sidewalk where many kids walk to school. Not a safe set up when occupied so I'd love to strike while the iron's hot and clear this area and also do some good pruning of the entryway so as to remove cover for folks who think this might a good hiding spot. This has become a cleanup strategy at past encampments and we're seeing less people moving back into the areas when we make it more visible and thus less inviting.
The cleanup will be just off Croft Pl. SW which is the street that runs up the hill behind the school. If the weather holds up the actual clean should be pretty straight forward as its right off the sidewalk and is flat. There are some "mountain goat" opportunities where trash has been thrown down steeper sections if we have anyone looking for more of an adventure.
I’m suggesting adults with children clean up on the school campus and around the neighborhood and only a limited amount of folks work in the actual encampment area.
Parking & Meet-Up
There is no parking on the hill so we'll need to park down by the school on Juneau and walk up to the entrance which is about halfway up Croft. We'll likewise need to ferry the collected trash in the wagon back down to Juneau for staging for contractors to pick up. I’ll have my phone on me if you need to reach out at 206-852-9552.
